Mrs. Alice M. Merrill was born March 20, 1828, at Albany, Vermont, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Theodore Himmelreich, Cotter, Iowa, March 29, 1983, being only a few days past sixty-five years of age at the time of her death. She was married to Mr. John L. Merrill, October 15, 1855, at Albany, Vermont, and on her wedding day started for her new home in Iowa. She located with her husband on a farm in Columbus City township, and here were born their five children, four of whom survive their parents. These are Mrs. Himmelreich, Cotter, W. A., who is in business in Columbus Junction, Mrs. Robt. Owen and Miss Ida both of whom live here. Besides her children, Mrs. Merrill leaves a sister and three brothers to mourn her loss. She also leaves many other relatives and a host of friends who will miss her sadly. She was a faithful and affectionate wife, a devoted mother and a kind friend and neighbor. Her fatal illness was contracted while caring for her daughter, Mrs. Himmelreich, who was seriously ill, and she was never able to return to her home. She was a very quiet retiring woman, domestic in her tastes and untiring in her efforts for the well-being of her family. She possessed fine artistic tastes and had the quality of doing thoroughly and beautifully whatever she undertook. Mrs. Merrill will long be remembered in Columbus Junction.
