Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, April 6, 1893 page 1

Joseph England was born in Michigan in May, 1835; came with his parents to Iowa in 1840 and this state he has made his home almost continuously until the time of his death, which occurred near his home in Marshall township, Wednesday, March 29, 1893. This would make him about fifty-eight years of age. His father Thomas England, entered about 400 acres of land near Wapello in or about 1835. He died in 1844 leaving Joseph and two brothers, George and Samuel orphans almost in infancy. Judge Springer was appointed guardian for the boys and Joseph made his home there for some years, gaining a good practical education in the public schools at Wapello, at which place Mr. Springer then lived. In 1848, on the account of poor health, he left town to make his home for some time with the late Joshua Marshall, of Virginia Grove. He continued to be a farmer until his death. In 1866 he was married to Melinda Skinner, who was born in Guernsey county, Ohio. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive him. Notwithstanding severe domestic afflictions, Mr. England was a highly successful business man and leaves property to his heirs. His reputation for veracity and honest dealing was second to none; he was a model citizin and one who can be illy spared. The immediate cause of his death was a paralytic stroke while moving from his farm to make his home in Winfield. He has been doctoring for nervous trouble for a year past and his sudden taking off was not altogether unexpected. A large concourse of his old friends, neighbors and relatives testified their appreciation of his worth as a man, by their attendance at his funeral services which took place from the church at Winfield on Friday.
