Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, January 19, 1893 page 8

Our community was shocked Monday morning to learn of the death at his home in Wapello on the evening before of A. D. Hurley, an old settler and respected citizen of Louisa county. Aaron Downs Hurley was born near Urbana, Champaign county, Ohio July 17, 1817, and died at his home in Wapello, Iowa, Sunday evening January 15, 1893. Mr. Hurley had been a sufferer from Bright's disease for a number of years, the immediate cause of his death being blood poison. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1840, and located in what is now Wapello township. He married May 7, 1848, to Miss Sarah Drake. To them were born nine children, six of whom with their mother survive to mourn the loss of husband and father. The surviving children are David, Winfield, Alice, Aaron, Ed and Florence, none of whom are married, and all of whom were born in Wapello township. For many years Mr. Hurley resided on his farm, five miles south of Wapello. In 1882 he removed to the town of Wapello where he made his home until the time of his death. He was a temporate and upright man, possessed of excellent business ability and industrious habits. He had acquired a competence and was considered on of the substantial men of the the county. He was a brother of Hon. Jas. S. Hurley who preceded him to the spirit world about one year. The funeral occurred on Tuesday, January 17, and was largely attended, showing the respect and estimation in which the deceased was held. The family and friends have the sympathy of the entire community.
