Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa, Wed. February 22, 1888 page 4

Obituary – Charles Kern was born in Grandview Iowa, December 12, 1859, and died in Columbus Junction, February 16, 1888. His funeral services at the Evangetical church, last Saturday afternoon, called forth a large audience of mourners and sympathizing friends.

His integrity and quiet unassuming manner won for him many true friends. Being of Christian parentage, and from his youth having received the blessing of the Sabbath school, he early became a devoted bible reader and praying youth. However, he was tempted to leave off this early formed and important practice and yielded to the temptation. But finding nothing that could take the place of his bible and prayer, some months before his death he returned to them only to find increasing comfort in them. A few weeks before he died he found pardon and peace through faith in Christ. His last words to the family were of instruction and cheer. Shortly before his death he sang in German a Sabbath school song he had learned in his youth.

“Soon we go, soon we go
There we hear the angels singing,
Soon we go, soon we go.”

Presently he committed all to God in prayer and soon after passed quietly away. – T. M. Evans.
