Maude Mehaffy Dies Dec. 25

Mrs. Maude Mehaffy, 79, for many years a resident of the Morning sun community, died Christmas day in Burlington hospital where she had been a patient for several months. Mrs. Mehaffy suffered a stroke on July 14 and was hospitalized at that time. At the time of her death she was a resident of Monmouth, Illinois where she moved upon leaving Morning Sun in 1846.

Formerly a teacher in the schools of Louisa county, Mrs. Mehaffy received her grade school education at the Mid-Prairie school and later graduated from the Morning Sun high school and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.

Maude Mellinger Mehaffy, daughter of Isaac Mellinger and Sarah Ann Curran, was born in Louisa county on February 22, 1871. She moved with her parents to Morning Sun where she lived until her marriage to Martin Luther Mehaffy on March 15, 1906. Mr. and Mrs. Mehaffy made their home on a farm in the Sharon community until Mr. Mehaffy’s death in 1917. Mrs. Mehaffy then moved to Morning Sun to be with her mother. Early in life she united with the church, transferring her membership from the Morning Sun Methodist church to the United Presbyterian in Monmouth after she had moved to that city.

Mrs. Mehaffy was preceded in death by her father, her mother, and a brother, E. A. Mellinger. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Inez A. Hensleigh and her brother-in-law, Oliver Hensleigh, of Monmouth.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Prugh’s chapel in Burlington with interment in Elmwood cemetery in Morning Sun.
