Janice “Jan” Cooley, 87, of Morning Sun, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Graveside services will be held 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2020 at Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. A memorial has been established in Jan’s name. Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Morning Sun, formerly The Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, is caring for Jan’s arrangements and her family.

Janice Ellen Hamilton was born on January 2, 1933 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of James and Anne (Mason) Hamilton. Jan graduated from What Cheer High School in 1950; she then received her AA degree from Iowa Wesleyan College after teaching country school for one year. In 1953, she was united in marriage to Howard Cooley. Jan went on to receive her BA degree from Iowa Wesleyan College and taught second grade from 1963 until 1976. In 1981, she received her AA degree in Nursing from Indian Hills College and went on to be a RN until her retirement in 2003. Jan was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Morning Sun, Louisa County Historical Society, Louisa County Genealogy Society, Morning Sun Lionesses, Morning Sun Garden Club and the United Methodist Women. Jan enjoyed traveling and visited all 48 continental states, gardening, tending to her flowers, attending her grandchildren’s activities and boxer dogs and siamese cats.

Jan will be deeply missed by her daughter, Jill Cooley of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Cooley of Morning Sun; granddaughter, Lisa (Jeff) VanAmerongen of Morning Sun; grandson, Mark (Brook) Cooley of Morning Sun and Richie (Amanda) Cooley of Morning Sun and great-grandchildren, Jeff, Tyler, Garrett, Presley, Abbie and Mason Cooley and Mallory and MacKenzie VanAmerongen.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard in 2015 and her son, Drew in 2012.
