Another Old Pioneer Laid to Rest
As noted in our last issue, James Finley Cornelius died at his home west of town Wednesday, April 24th. The funeral services were held from his late hom Friday last at 10 a.m. conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. P. Nesbit. The interment was at our city cemetery.
Mr. Cornelius was born in Adams county, Ohio, October 15, 1826. In 1852 he came to Louisa county, this state. The last 38 years of his life was spent on the homestead on which he died. He was twoce married, the first to Miss Kate Braden; and Miss Mary Thompson became his helpmate in later years. To the second union was born one daughter and three sons. One son died some years ago, and two sons and the daughter mourn his death.
The deceased was a veteran of ’61-65, being a member of Co. F, 8th Iowa Inf. He was made a prisoner at the battle of Shiloh in 1862 and spent about eight months in Libby prison. Here he contracted diseases that remained with him and impaired his health the rest of his life. Mr. Cornelius was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
