July 18, 1901 Morning Sun News-Herald. I am not related and have no further information.

Laid to Rest.

The funeral of Mrs. Sam’l Grubb, whose tragic death was mentioned in last week’s issue, was held from the Methodist Episcopal church in this city last Friday at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. D. C. Bevan. The body was brought up from Burlington at 9:12, accompanied by the breaved husband and several friends and relatives. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery.

The relatives have asked that we correct the report in the Burlington papers of the cause of her death. There was no explosion of the gasoline stove as at first reported. The particulars as near as Mrs. Grugg was able to give them before her death were these: Some paper that had been hung on the wall back of the stove to protect the wall caught fire while Mrs. Grubb was using the stove in getting breakfast. She endeavored to put the fire out, in the meantime attempting to turn the burner off. In the excitement she turned the burner on farther, causing a rush of gasoline and the burner to flare up. Her dress skirts caught fire and despite the endeavors of herself and Mr. Grubb, received burns about her arms and breast which caused her death a few hours later.

The deceased was the oldest daughter of Mr. Mrs. D. R. Jones of this city and was about 30 years of age. She united with the M. E. Church when 18 years of age and was highly respected by all who knew her. With her husband she had been a resident of Burlington for the past few years.

The following friends and relatives were called here to attend the funeral: Ed Grubb, Jas Bice, Miss Cambell and Miss Schaeffer of Burlington; Mrs. Myrtle Porter, Miss Blanche Kerr and Jas. Kerr, Cedar Rapids; Joe Jones and wife of Rock Island; Mrs. Walter Mincher, Mrs. J. W. Jamison, Wapello: Mrs. Arthur, Mrs. David Hughes, Jno. Richards and Wm. Jones, Cotter.
