THE WAPELLO TRIBUNE, Wapello, Iowa - Thursday, October 5, 1911 - Page 1.
Mrs. Eliza Jane Mincher, one of the earliest settlers of this county and a most prominent and well known resident, died last Wednesday morning at the hospital in Iowa City, following an operation performed Tuesday for the removal of a tumor of the lower jaw. Mrs. Mincher rallied following the operation, and confident hopes of her recovery were entertained, but later grew worse, succumbing to the shock of the operation. The news of her death came as a great shock to her friends here, and cast a gloom over the entire community.
Mrs. Mincher was born in Connersville, Ohio, October 22, 1823, and would have celebrated her eighty-eighth birthday had she lived until the 22d of the present month. She spent her childhood with her parents in Indiana. Her father, George Key, was a pioneer of Ohio, Indiana and Iowa. He came to Iowa in 1836 and brought his family here two years later. He was prominent as an early settler, an Indian trader and in later years as a farmer.
His daughter was married to Edward Mincher in Henry county in 1841. Her husband preceded her in death years ago. Three children also preceded their mother in death. The two surviving children are Mrs. L. C. Wonnell of Wapello, with whom Mrs. Mincher made her home and John Mincher, of Alva, Okla.
Funeral services will be held from the M. E. church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. T. S. Pool, assisted by Rev. E. C. Brooks. Interment will occur in the Wapello cemetary.
NOTES - There is no "Connersville" in Ohio. There is one in Indiana. There is a Conesville (Coshocton Co.) and a Connorville (Jefferson Co.) in Ohio, as well as several other similar sounding names. As her parents were married in Union County, Indiana in 1821, it seems most likely that Eliza Jane was born in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana, with Fayette and Union Counties being adjoining.
