Faithe Furnas

Faithe Furnas, 94, of Columbus Junction (Iowa), died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction. The funeral service was Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiating. Burial was in the Letts Cemetery (Louisa County, Iowa)

Visitation was an hour and a half prior to the service at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established at the funeral home for Camp Courageous.

Faithe Elizabeth Walter was born July 29, 1910, in Muscatine County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Nettie Hidlebaugh Walter. She graduated from Letts High School in 1928. On April 11, 1931 she was united in marriage with Marvin Lambert Furnas in Rock Island, Illinois.

Later she taught at the Strawberry Hill School and in 1940 graduated from the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport. She was employed in Mail and Records at the Rock Island Arsenal for several years and in 1943 she and her husband moved to their farm near Letts.

Faithe was a long time member of the Letts Methodist Church, a charter member of the Letts Federated Club and of the Letts Garden Club. She worked as secretary for the Hoover Company, R. J. Dick Co. in Muscatine, Ceylon Seals and Thatcher Plastic Packaging and for several years as secretary at the Louisa-Muscatine School office. After her husband’s death in October 1970 Faithe retired and moved from the farm into Columbus Junction (Iowa) and in 1988 moved to Bettendorf (Iowa). There she was a member of the Davenport Women’s Club, Member-at-large of T.T.T., Genesis Auxiliary, Louisa County Historical Society, and of the Bettendorf Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Lois, visiting many countries. She also enjoyed being a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City for several years.

She is survived by her nephew, Dan P. Furnas of Orlando, Florida; a niece, Norma Dee Millett of East Wenatchee, Washington; and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1970; two brothers, Floyd in infancy and Harold in 1970; and her sister, Lois Walter in 2002.
