Floyd D. Reif

Floyd Daniel Reif, age 90, of Wapello (Iowa) died Monday morning, December 29, 2003, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello. The son of Wesley and Lillie Kopp Reif, he was born November 28, 1913, near Sperry (Iowa). He married Grace L. Oberman on June 8k, 1939, at Middletown (Iowa).

Floyd grew up on the family farm near Danville (Iowa) and graduated from Danville High School in 1931. He attended Burlington Junior College for two years.

A couple of years after their marriage, Floyd and Grace moved to a farm near Mount Union (Iowa), living there for twelve years before coming to rural Wapello (Iowa) in 1954. Floyd enjoyed farming and continued being involved with the family farm throughout his lifetime.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello (Iowa) where he had served on several committees through the years and sang in the choir.

He was a fifty-year Mason, having initially joined at Mount Union (Iowa) and then transferred to the Wapello Masonic Lodge #5 A.F. & A.M. where he had advanced to the 33rd Degree. He had served as the Junior Warden and Junior Deacon with the Iowa Lodge. He was a member of the Davenport (Iowa) Consistory and the Burlington (Iowa) York Rites Bodies.

He had been actively involved with the Louisa County Farm Bureau, the Louisa County Cattlemen’s Association, the Iowa Corn and Soybean Association, and several other committees throughout the community. He had been a 4-H leader and helped with the Boy Scouts.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters, Colleen Carlson of Chicago, Illinois, and Joyce Veach of Burlington (Iowa); a son, Jack Reif of Wapello (Iowa); three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Luella Schaap of Georgetown, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Scarlet.

The funeral service was held Friday at the United Methodist Church in Wapello (Iowa), with the Revs. Harlan W. Winter and Chris Thomas officiating. Music was provided by Sandy Winter, organist, with vocalists Nancy Pierce, Anita Odle, Merlin Schneider and Leroy Pierce singing “precious Lord, Take My Hand”, and “Abide With Me.” The pallbearers included John Gipple, Jack Samuels, Danny Gipple, Don Williams, Larry Ellerhoff and John Witte. Honorary bearers were George Small, Ray Werner, Adolph Boysen, Charles Laughlin, Paul Linder, Jim Devore, Maurice Schmeiser and Harold Small. The Masonic Rites were presented by Don Mayer. After a lunch at the church, burial followed at the Trinity Cemetery at Mount Union (Iowa).

Visitation was Thursday evening at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church in Wapello (Iowa).
