Serilda M. BairdSerilda Martha Baird, age 94, a long-time resident of the morning Sun community, died Saturday morning, October 29, 1994 at her home. She was born September 7, 1900 to Daniel and Emma Brewer Bowers in Washington County, Indiana. She married Samuel Baird on March 10, 1925 at Campbellsburg, Indiana, and moved to the Marsh community near Morning Sun (Iowa). He died October 23, 1945. Her life career was caring for her family and managing the family farms. She was an activity community member participating in the former Marsh Methodist Church and the Marsh Club. Her life on the farm included a love for pets, gardening, cooking, piecing quilts, and the associations with relatives and friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Haines of Joliet, Illinois, and Dorothy A. Begel of Des Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel; two daughters, Crystal Biggerstaff and Mary Emma Baird; one great-grandchild; her parents, seven brothers; and two sisters.
The funeral service for Serilda Baird was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31, 1994 at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun with Rev. Jack Edmisson and Rev. Chris Ebbers officiating. Music was provided by Pam Butler as organist and Charles Beck and Esther Calahan as vocalists singing "Whispering Hope" and "Amazing Grace." The casket bearers were James Biggerstaff, Leonard Biggerstaff, David Biggerstaff, Joyce Allen, Margaret Biggerstaff, Carla Allsop, Phyllis Gearhart, Audrey Begel and Robert Begel. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun (Iowa).The family met with friends from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Morning Sun (Iowa).
A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Morning Sun Community Ambulance Service.
