Lewis Kammerer

Lewis Albert ‘Luke’ Kammerer, age 88, of Wapello, died Thursday evening, September 9, 2004 at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center. The son of Harry and Margaret Weise Kammerer, he was born January 14, 1916, at Port Louisa (Louisa County, Iowa). He married M. Louise Heater on February 27, 1937, in Muscatine (Iowa). She preceded him in death on September 18, 2003.

Luke had farmed and then worked at HON Industries at Muscatine (Iowa) for 25 years, retiring in 1981. He helped his wife as church custodian for the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello.

He was a 53-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, where he had served both as an elder and an usher. He also was a member of the Geode-A-Bagos Camping Club, and thoroughly loved gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald and Dianna Kammerer of Morning Sun (Iowa) and Bruce Kammerer of Libertyville (Iowa); three daughters, Janet and John Hilde of Casper, Wyoming, Karen and Joiner Yakle of Wapello (Iowa) and Sharon and Ron Whitehorn of Wapello(Iowa); fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Louise; two sisters, Gertrude and Iona; and three brothers, Frank, William, and Carl.

The funeral service for Lewis Kammerer was Monday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James H. Huston officiating. Betty McChesney, organist, and John Hilde, vocalist, provided music. The pallbearers included John Lewis Hilde, Eric HIlde, Darren Hilde, Thomas Yakle, Kenneth Yakle, Michael Whitehorn, Nathan Whitehorn, Jim Kammerer, Matt Kammerer, Shane Kammerer, Adam Kammerer, Mark Kammerer, and Chris Kammerer. Burial followed in the Wapello Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the First Presbyterian Church of Wapello (Iowa).
