Margaret E. Hiller

Margaret Elizabeth Leuer Hiller, 89, died February 17, 2004, at Cooper County Hospital in Boonville, Missouri. She was born August 8, 1914 on her parents’ farm outside Zion, Iowa, near Creston. Her parents were Joseph Clarence and Ida May Davenport Lauer. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Zion Country School.

She attended Iowa State College in Ames (Iowa) and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls (Iowa) Majoring in Education. She taught school in Gilbert (Iowa) and Grandview (Iowa).

On June 4, 1939, she married Martin William Hiller, a graduate of Iowa State College who also taught school for a time in Iowa. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and they were stationed in Illinois and Florida. They had three children, Marlys Lillian, Marlene LaVerne and Marlin William.

Martin was sent to India and China while the family returned to Iowa to live with parents and parents-in-law. The family joined Martin in China in 1947 as part of the post war occupation forces.

They were eventually stationed at Air Force bases in Tacoma, Washington, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tucson, Arizona, Plattsburgh, New York, Clark Air Base, Philippine Islands, and Long Island, New York. While in Plattsburgh, Margaret attended the New York State Teachers College, earning her Master of Education Degree. After that she taught school until retirement, specializing in grades 1 to 4 and later in Special Education classes for elementary school children.

They retired in 1975, moving to Heber Springs, Arkansas and eventually to Council Bluffs (Iowa). She has lived in New Franklin, Missouri since 1985 and attended the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Marlin of New Franklin; five grandchildren, Justin and Jason Hiller, Laura Moran, Timothy, James and Theresa Jorris; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Hiller.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters Marlys Sanford and Marlene Jorris, and nine brothers and sisters.

There was a graveside service Saturday, February 21 at Parsons Cemetery, Toolesboro (Louisa County, Iowa) with the Rev. Harlan Winter officiating.

A visitation was held Friday evening at the Friemoonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette, Missouri.
