Gary R. Wiley

Gary R. Wiley, 67, rural Abingdon, Illinois, died at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. He was born February 20, 1936 in Louisa County, Iowa to Harvey and Esther Wiley. He graduated from Morning Sun, Iowa school and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant (Iowa). He married Betty Blair on December 12, 1959 in Galesburg, Illinois. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lynn Jones of Abingdon (Illinois); one son, Scott Wiley of Abingdon (Illinois); six grandchildren; and two brothers, Tobe Wiley of Wapello (Iowa) and Richard Wiley of Muscatine (Iowa).

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

He played professional baseball as pitcher with the New York Yankees organization and later served as a scout. He worked at the former Rowe Mfg. Co. in Galesburg (Illinois) for ten years and later became the manager of the heating and air conditioning division of May Company in Galesburg (Illinois).

He managed the Galesburg Merchants baseball team and coached little league baseball in Abingdon (Illinois) for several years.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Funeral services were Monday at the Hinchliff Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon (Illinois) with the Revs. Paul Dinges and Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday at the chapel.

Memorials may be made to the family or the Christian Children’s Fund.
