Alfred Whitaker

Alfred Lewis ‘Al’ Whitaker, 78, of Wapello (Iowa), died Sunday morning, February 1, 2004, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello (Iowa). The son of Levi and Esther Rice Whitaker, he was born February 8, 1925, in Oakville (Iowa). He married Audrey I. Griffin on October 5, 1946, in Wapello (Iowa).

He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Fleet on the battleship USS West Virginia.

He worked as a welder at General Electric in Burlington (Iowa) and retired in 1987.

He was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church. (Grandview, Iowa)

He had been a Little League coach, enjoyed camping along with fishing and hunting, woodworking and home remodeling.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; three sons, Michael and Susan Whitaker and Jackie Whitaker of Oakville (Iowa), and Roddy and Dorothy Whitaker of Mediapolis (Iowa); nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Whitaker of Oakville (Iowa), Lucetta Clevenger of Louisburg, Kansas, and Mary Curtis of Fort Scott, Kansas; and a brother, Hilbert Whitaker of Oakville (Iowa).

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Clara Esther, an infant grandson, and four brothers, John, Levi Jr., Charlie, and infant Virgin.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello (Iowa) where the family met with friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 5 at the funeral home with the Rev. Daryl Erickson and Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. John Zippe will provide the listening music along with a special of ‘On The Wings of a Snow White Dove.’ Kelli Whitaker will also sing a vocal selection. The pallbearers will include Rick Whitaker, Toby Whitaker, Allen Whitaker, Corey Whitaker, Nick Whitaker, and Mindy Mingo. Honorary bearers will be Dick Whitaker and Randy Whitaker. Flower attendants will be Randi Gerling, Kim Whitaker-Logan and Kelli Whitaker. Burial will follow in the Wapello Cemetery (Louisa County, Iowa)

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit.
