Rose Mary Hayes

Rose Mary Hayes, 80, of Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City and formerly of Wapello, died Friday afternoon, October 7, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The daughter of Earl C. and Alice Walberg Bennett, she was born on February 8, 1931 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Rose Mary graduated from Letts High School in 1949 and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951. She taught elementary school in Durant until her marriage to Elmer Hayes on February 14, 1959 at the Pleasant Grove Church, rural Columbus Junction. They farmed together near Wapello and she continued substitute teaching at Wapello. Elmer preceded her in death on October 7, 1972.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW in Wapello and a member of the Goodwill Club of Toolesboro. She had been a 4-H leader and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, gardening and genealogy.

Her daughter includes two daughters, Diane and Brad Thayer and Connie and Andy Millson both of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Zachary and Gina Thayer; and a sister, Sally and Ron Carpenter of Columbus Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmer, and a sister, Betty Barnes.

The funeral service for Rose Mary Hayes was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Wapello with the Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating. Burial followed in the Wapello Cemetery. Friends and family gathered in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church after the committal.

Visitation was Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family met with friends in the evening.

A memorial fund was established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church and the Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
