Gladys L. Messer

Gladys LuEllen Messer, 83, of Wapello, Iowa, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center. The daughter of Clarence and Clara Jerusha Bouton Tisor, she was born June 12, 1920, in Louisa County. She attended school in Wapello. She married Ralph Lester Messer on March 2, 1940, in Muscatine; he preceded her in death on June 21, 1991.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and raising a family. She enjoyed decorating cakes, painting ceramics, knitting afghans, doing puzzles, watching baseball, or painting pictures for her family.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth “Ken” Messer, Donald “Don” Messer, and Keith “Red” Messer, all of Wapello; two daughters, Barbara Reid of Letts and Nancy Stephens of Lakeland, Florida; four grandsons; six granddaughters; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Tisor of Burlington; and a sister, Daisy Schneider of Clearlake, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; a grandson, Karl Messer; three infant brothers; two sisters, Lela Marshall and Inez Lankford; and two step-sisters, Mabel Courtney and Alice Crowell.

The funeral service was held Wednesday morning at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the Wapello Cemetery. The pallbearers were Mark Messer, Lon Messer, Ray Messer, Bill Messer, Phil Dennings, and Michael Steahr.
