Virgilia Williams

Virgilia ‘Jill’ Williams, 89, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at the Wapello Nursing and Care Center.

She had donated her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine and at her request there was no visitation or memorial service. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine, was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be nade to the Louisa County Public Health Nursing Services, Iowa City Hospice, or a charity of the donor’s choice, and mailed to the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home at 1931 Houser Street, Muscatine, Iowa 52761. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

Virgilia Williams was born October 16, 1914 in Grandview, the daughter of Harold Ralph and Leila Lieberknect Williams.

She was a long time educator. After graduating with honors from Mount Vernon High School, Mount Vernon, she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell College where she majored in History and Elementary Education. She was one of th earlier Iowa teachers to begin her career with the highest level of certification and then meet requirements for life time teaching. Throughout her career she earned further credits at Drake University, Denver University Graduate School, and Augustana College, where she was certified as a Speech Therapist, and she also attended Northwestern University Graduate School where she earned certification as a teacher for the Hearing Impaired.

During World War II she served as a Hospital Corp WAVE at Camp LeJeune, N.C. and as an instructor at the Hunter College Base.

Survivors include two sisters, Naomi Peralta and Corita McCormac, several nieces and nephews, and the Philip and Mary Loving family whose warmth and care provided Jill with a family for years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and four sisters, Aileen Locher, Jean Croy, Pricilla Sparks and Marian Maloy.
