Paul Grouwinkel, 98 of Columbus Junction, died Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiating. Pallbearers were the grandchildren and their spouses. In lieu of flowers, memorials were directed to the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

Following the service at the funeral home, a time of food and fellowship was held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. The burial service was then conducted in the Wapello Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation was Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Paul Grouwinkel was born September 5th, 1905 in Louisa County, Iowa the son of William Henry and Rachael Deppy Grouwinkel. On June 12th, 1931, he was united in marriage to Frances Josephine Barnes in Nashua.

He was a superintendent of schools for 17 years and then farmed in the Columbus Junction area. He was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Gary Grouwinkel and his wife, Diane, of Mount Prospect, Illinois; one daughter, Betty Lethcoe of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Vera Wiley of Conesville and Bernice Newhard of Sun City, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Josephine in 1990, two sons, Keith and Kenneth, one brother, George and five sisters, Mabel Story, Maude Stone, Abbie Adamson, Elizabeth McCulley and Effie Crammond.
