Jack Erwin, age 77, of Crawfordsville, Iowa, died Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following complications from ALS Disease.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with Pastor Jason Collier and Larry Fletcher officiating. Visitation began at noon, Tuesday at the Jones and Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family received friends from 5:00 until 8:00 Tuesday Evening. Interment will take place at the Crawfordsville Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the United Church of Crawfordsville, Hospice of Washington County or the Crawfordsville First Responders. Jack was born May 22, 1935 in Washington, Iowa the son of Sam and Marjorie (Green) Erwin. He graduated from Olds High School in 1953. Jack was united in marriage to Ruth Davis on June 15, 1956 at the Salem Welsh Church in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa.

He worked at the Farmer’s Elevator in Olds, Iowa and farmed in the Olds community prior to moving to Crawfordsville in 1966. In the mid-sixties he and Cleo Rodgers established the business of C and J Fertilizer at Olds. He was also a representative for the Bloomfield Livestock Market and farmed in the Crawfordsville community for 46 years.

Jack was an active member of the United Church of Crawfordsville having served on numerous committees. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club having recently been honored as Lion of the Year. Jack served on the Washington County Soil Conservation Board of Directors, was a Crawford Township Trustee and was a member of the Washington County Cattleman’s Association. In his earlier years, Jack was a 4-H Leader.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Erwin of Crawfordsville, Iowa; daughter, Sharon Boring and husband, Tom of Swisher, Iowa; son, David Erwin and wife, Tammy of Crawfordsville, Iowa; four granddaughters: Lindsay Hubbell and husband, Adam of Ottumwa, Iowa; Ami Boring of Swisher, Iowa; Janelle Erwin and Joni Erwin of Crawfordsville, Iowa; and three sisters: Mary Benson of Winfield, Iowa; Fran Pleak and husband, Lee of Red Oak, Iowa; and Lois Hobbs of Galesburg, Illinois.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and one brother-in-law, Duayne Benson.
