Vera M. Troutwine

Vera M. Troutwine, 101, of Wapello, died Thursday morning, March 8, 2012, at the Wapello Nursing & rehab Center. The daughter of Jess Reason and Ella Leona Estes Mills, she was born November 13, 1910 in Jefferson County, Iowa. She married George Troutwine in 1929 in Streator, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1969.

Vera graduated from Fairfield High School in 1928. She and her husband lived in Winona and Streator for several years where they owned and operated a restaurant. They moved to Reseda, California in 1953. Vera worked for Sears for 25 years until retirement.

Vera enjoyed people and their friendships, especially her fellow members of TOPS. She was a member of the National Bowling Association and was an accomplished bowler having competed for many years in National Bowling Competitions. She was an active bowler to the age of 93. She was also an organizer and very active in Special Olympics. Vera was well known for her quick wit.

Her surviving family includes her sons, Robert ‘Bobby’ Troutwine at home in Wapello and Dean Williams of Independence, Missouri/ six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; her brother, Jess & Pat Mills of Morning Sun; a half-brother, Jack Mills of Ottumwa; a half sister, Mary Louise Berg of Denver, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; a son, George Jr.; and a sister, Betty.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family will meet friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The funeral service for Vera Troutwine will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Perhealth officiating. Cremation will take place following the funeral.

A memorial fund has been established at Iowa State Bank in Wapello for Bobby’s Special Needs.
