Marian Ruth Minnis

Marian Ruth Minnis, 95, of Morning Sun, died Saturday morning, February 11, 2012 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The daughter of L. Ray and Grace Kopp Wilson, she was born February 5, 1917 in Yarmouth. She married John W. Minnis on August 27, 1939 in Morning Sun. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1990.

Marian graduated from Yarmouth High School. She helped her Dad in the Wilson’s Hardware and was notably the first lady in Louisa County to receive a chauffeur’s license for the delivery purposes. She was a homemaker and very active in her community.

Marian was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun and was a Sunday School teacher along with serving on many committees. She was active in the United Methodist Women and the Gospelaires as an original member. She had been a Cub Scout Den Mother and was a member of the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club as well as the Louisa County Election Board for many years. She had also been a member of the TT Bridge Club in Morning Sun.

She enjoyed needlepoint and cross-stitch of which she made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.

Following her husband’s retirement, they enjoyed travelling throughout the country and abroad including the Holy Land, Australia, an Alaskan cruise, the Panama Canal, Mississippi River cruises, and Ireland to research John’s heritage.

She especially enjoyed cooking family dinners at her home and also for any extended family and community to share her foods and talents with friends and neighbors in Morning Sun. Marian truly enjoyed her family of multi generations.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicki I. and Raymond Fisher of Wapello; two sons, Billy Lee and Karen Minis of Morning Sun and Craig L. and Gina Minnis of Bend, Oregon; eight grandchildren, B.J. Minnis, Michelle Kiesey, Jonathan Minnis, Cristina Minnis, Daniela Minnis, Melissa Main, Jennifer Ewart and Holly Jacobsen; two step-grandchildren, Kate McKenna and Ksenija Zeltkalns; ten great-grandchildren, Avery and Aiden Kiersey, Dylan, Blake and Elizabeth Maine, Kimberlee, Jessica, Jacob and Christopher Ewart, and Mallory Jacobsen; one step-great-grandson, Ben Zeltkalns; and a brother, Charles Wilson of Burlington .

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John; and two sisters, Erma Earnest and Marjorie Carr.

The funeral service for Marian Minnis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with the Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family met with friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Centenary United Methodist Church, Morning Sun.
