Raymond LeRoy Pogemiller

Raymond LeRoy Pogemiller died Monday, February 6, 2012. He was born at the home one mile west of Morning Sun, IA to Raymond F. Pogemiller and Gladys Bazel Pogemiller on January 3, 1932.

He attended the Morning Sun Consolidated Schools and graduated in May 1950 as valedictorian. In June, he began his college education at the Conservatory of Music, then a private school, in Kansas City, Missouri.

After his sophomore year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He was shipped overseas and was eventually stationed in Korea. He was a clerk for the 6th Medical Depot (Army), returning home in mid-August, 1954.

He continued his studies at the Conservatory and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Theory in 1955. He received a Master’s Degree in the same discipline in 1957.

He married Carolyn Sue Andrews on August 20, 1955.

They moved to New Rochelle, NY, for a summer and returned to complete the Master’s Degree. They returned to New Rochelle. After two years they moved to East Liverpool, OH, where he taught junior high choir. He started a PhD in Musicology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After two years, they returned to Kansas City where he finished a DMA in Music History at the University of Missouri in 1967.

He taught more than 30 years at the conservatory. He worked with graduate students as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies. He served as Interim Dean for 13 months while a search was going on to find a permanent Dean. He returned from UMKC in 2000 as Professor Emeritus with many Excellence in Teaching awards to his credit.

In retirement he continued to give his passion and musical talents in his church and family life.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, after 56 years of marriage; daughter Margaret Coffey Berardo and husband Dr. Marcellino Berardo; daughter Teresa Pogemiller Farley and husband James Farley; grandchildren Alison Lauren Pogemiller Farley and Adam Hamilton Farley; brother Normal W. Pogemiller from West Des Moines, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7PM with a reception following at Liberty Christian Church, 427 E. Kansas, Liberty, MO 64068.
