Norma J. Alter
Norma Jean Alter, 78, of Burlington, formerly of Morning Sun and Mount Pleasant, died at 2:38 a.m. Thursday, October 30, 2003 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born November 27, 1924, in Morning Sun, she was the daughter of Arthur Verne and Mary Georgia Siverly Wilson. On November 27, 1946, she married William “Bill” Alter in Burlington.
She was a homemaker and a registered nurse for 38 years at Mercy Hospital and Burlington Medical Center, working mostly in continuing education. She retired in 1983.
She was a 1942 graduate of Morning Sun High School and a 1945 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, E.C. Blackmar Order of the Eastern Star and served on a committee for the Iowa Nursing Association.
She enjoyed working outside in the garden and lawn and loved to read, go mushrooming, family gatherings, and teach at her job.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Nancy L. Lekin of Cedar Rapids and Jacqueline R. Plath of West Burlington; two sons, William E. Alter Jr., and Mark D. Alter, both of Burlington; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Lorna M. Wilson of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation was Sunday at Lunning Chapel where the family met with friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
The funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Burial was Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Morning Sun and Burlington libraries for large print books.
