David S. Gish

David Sears Gish, 73, of rural Wapello, died Monday morning, October 27, 2003, at his home. The son of Joseph Sears and Elizabeth Tomer Gish, he was born April 22, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He married Patsy S. Smith on November 10, 1962, at Oakville.

He graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania and from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a crew chief.

He worked as a mechanical engineer on rocket engines at Allegany Ballistics in Cumberland, Maryland. He then worked in sales for 26 years at Hercules Inc., in Maryland, Indiana, and Naperville, Illinois. After retiring he worked for L & W Power at Naperville and Detroit. He and Patsy came to Wapello in 1991.

He was a member of the American Legion at Oakville. He was also a member and had served as a district vice president for the Academy of Model Aeronautics. A longtime pilot, he enjoyed flying and was involved with several flying clubs.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike Gish of Rosedale, Indiana;, Eric Gish of Wapello and Matt Gish of Wapello; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 30, at the United Methodist Church in Oakville, with the Rev. Harlan W. Winter officiating. A private burial of his cremated remains will be held independently.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the American Cancer Society and the Hospice of Iowa City.
