Shirley M. Hughes

Shirley May Hughes, 65, died September 9, 2003, at the Potosi Manor Nursing Center, Potosi, Missouri. She was born November 15, 1937, to Thomas Rexford and Vivian Boden Woodruff in Columbus Junction.

She was united in marriage June 5, 1957, to Thurman Hughes in Cairo, Iowa.

She was active in many community events and church women’s organizations. She was a Sunday School teacher, played piano and sang, as a member of the Potosi Presbyterian Church.

She was a former member of a bowling league and had been a school bus driver for 15 years for the Potosi R-3 School District.

She is survived by her husband, Thurman; one daughter; Kristine and husband Philip Wallace of Potosi; two sons, Kendall and wife Donna of Park Hills, Missouri and James Gregory and wife Kimberlee Hughes of Potosi; six grandchildren, Heidi and Holly Wallace and Kendra, Danielle, Seth and Kyle Hughes; one sister, Dorothy Buffington and husband Delbert of Wapello, three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Marilyn Woodruff of Burlington, Tom and Doris Woodruff of Davenport and Delbert and Dorothy Woodruff of Sperry; a brother-in-law, Dean Hixson of New Martensville, W.V.; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Charlene Hixson.

The funeral service for Shirley Hughes was at 10 a.m. Friday, September 12, at the Moore Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Payne officiating. Musical selections were “Going Home” sung by Sue and the Rev. Payne, and “Ten Thousand Angels” sung by Joan Thornton. Burial was in the Red Bud Memorial Gardens, Potosi. Serving as pallbearers were Philip Wallace, Tom Woodruff, Harold Woodruff, Delbert Woodruff, Mike Buffington, Keith Buffington, Leroy Buffington, Mark Woodruff, and Scott Woodruff.
