Richard Hills

Richard “Dick” Hills, 76, of Columbus Junction, died Saturday, September 6, 2003, at his home in Muscatine. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiating. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marvin Cutler, Larry Cutler, Harley Cutler, Johnny Mickie, Randy Griffin and Vernon Rode. Honorary bearers were Art Pugh, Earl Scott, Bob Meeker, Sam Sands, Ray Boulton and Melchor Ramos.

Visitation was 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born June 17, 1927 in Columbus Junction to Addison and Margaraet Sheridan Hills. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hills married Lois Chamberlin on March 24, 1956, in Lancaster, Mo.

He retired from the Rath Packing plant and worked many years in the family’s business, Hills Excavating, in Columbus Junction.

He was a member of the Musicians Union for many years. He enjoyed music and singing and playing with numerous local bands in Iowa and Illinois for more than 50 years. One of his greatest pleasures was playing in a band and making new musician friends. He had a wonderful smile and great sense of humor and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Muscatine; two daughters, Deborah Tompkins and husband Bruce of Rapid City, S.D. and Sherry Buffington of Columbus Junction; five sons, Richie of Columbus Junction, Robert “Bob” George and wife Darla, William “Bill” and wife SuAnn, all of Muscatine, Douglas and wife Inge of Schwaubhasen, Germany; one brother, Bill and wife Karyn of Columbus Junction; 10 grandchildren, Joy Gabel and husband Brian of Cheyenne, Wyo., Amanda, Ashley, Dewayne, Adam and Dakota Hills, all of Muscatine, Casey Buffington and Dustin Buffington and wife Pam, all of Columbus Junction, and Nadine and Christian Hills of Schwaubhasen, Germany; four great-grandchildren, Briana and Gabbi Gabel of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Jacie and Hunter Buffington of Columbus Junction; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by one stillborn son, his parents, a sister, Vivian and a brother, Ronald.
