Bernice M. Mundt, 85, of Waverly, Iowa, died Sunday morning, September 25, 2011, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes.

Bernice was born on October 3, 1925, in Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Russell and Pearl (Baker) Adams. She graduated from Conesville High School in 1943, and graduated from the Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Missouri, in 1945. Following her schooling, Bernice moved to California, where she worked in the Recorder’s Office for the Monterey County Courthouse. Bernice then was united in marriage to J.C. Walker; the couple later divorced. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. Bernice taught at several schools that she attended as a child in the Conesville area.

On June 10, 1951, Bernice was united in marriage to Malvin Mundt in Conesville, Iowa. The couple farmed near Waverly for five years and then moved into Waverly. Bernice then went to work for the Waverly-Shell Rock School system as the Elementary Principal’s secretary and retired while working for the United State Department of Agriculture. Malvin died on November 27, 1995, and Bernice continued to live in her home until she became a resident of Linden Place at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Bernice was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church since October 15, 1995, where she was a member of the Ruth Circle. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, swimming, walking, jazz, playing her piano, playing cards, and traveling. She dearly loved the time spent with her family and friends.

Bernice is survived by her two sons and their wives, Michael (Patti) Mundt of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jerry (Kathy) Mundt of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two grandsons, Cory Mundt and Michael Mundt Jr and his, fiancée, Mariksa Quintana; one granddaughter, Kristi (John) Moore; two great-granddaughters, Kortney and Ashlyn; a great great-grandson, Kaedyn Click; sister, Wanda Carson of Columbus Junction, Iowa; and a brother, William Adams of Buffalo, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Malvin and by a brother, Howard Adams.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Karl Divine – Koch (Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Iowa City) officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Friday, October 7th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community or Cedar Valley Hospice, Waverly office. Online condolences for Bernice’s family may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
