The family of Barbara Ann Hauenstein is proud to celebrate the life of an extraordinary wife, mother, and lady. On September 29, 2011, Barbara departed this world with the same grace and dignity she manifested throughout her life. Born on August 28, 1930, in Orleans, Iowa she was the daughter of Raymond and Leona Atzen. Upon graduation from Albert City High School she attended Iowa Teacher’s College, earning her teaching certificate in 1950. During her collegiate years Barb was an accomplished artist, singer, dancer, and selected to the campus Homecoming Beauty Court. She began her teaching career as a primary educator in Britt, Iowa. Following a whirlwind romance, she wed Roy Hauenstein in August 1952,resulting in an enduring storybook love affair that lasted for over fifty-five years. Known as “Barbie” by her family and “Barb” by the community, she was meticulous in the oversight of all things relegated to the wife of a farmer and in the nurturing of their children. In addition to her role in the requirements of day-to-day farming operations, she was actively involved in many community organizations including Eastern Star, Etude Club, PTA, Athletic/Music Boosters, PEO, Junction Entertainers, and Lion’s Club. She was a long-time active member of the Cotter and Columbus Junction Presbyterian churches, serving as Sunday school and Bible school teacher, choir member and as Elder in each.

For many years, Barbara was Coordinator of Social Services at Colonial Manor. Within that capacity she provided compassionate and comprehensive support to co-workers and the residents and families of this community. She was the ultimate ‘listener.’ Tireless in her work and in client satisfaction, she never failed to put people ahead of paperwork. She was a pioneer and advocate of Hospice, providing training to local volunteers.

Understated in her talents, her friends will always remember her as a gracious hostess who fostered an atmosphere that was comforting and inviting. She excelled in sewing, cooking, gardening, good taste, listening, and common-sense advice. She never uttered a critical word of others, always preferring to see the glass as half-full. Always quick with a smile, she embraced humor and delighted people with her savvy perception and on-cue witticisms. Without notice, and at the amusement of her closest friends and family, she occasionally chose to be downright kooky. She was, and is, an inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to enjoy her company and her wisdom. She will be remembered for her unassuming insight, decorum, and unfailing Christian approach towards people and all aspects of life. Her children will always cherish the memories of a supportive mother, who quietly and consistently instilled the attributes of love, humility, and motivation.

Barbara was the loving mother of Jill (Leland Bowen), Jay (Lorie), and Jeff (Lori) Hauenstein. Grandchildren include Briana and Benjamin Bowen, Eric and Emily Hauenstein, Holly and Nick Hauenstein, and great-grandchild, Avery Bowen. Surviving siblings include Gordon (Peg) Atzen of Hackensack, Minnesota, and Terry Atzen of ­­­Big Fork, Montana. All of Aunt Barbie’s nieces and nephews were very special to her. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her parents, Leona and Raymond, and sister, Sandra. She will be missed dearly by all, but it is comforting to know that Barbara and Roy are embraced in everlasting dance.

A Memorial Service officiated by Rev. Faye Fedlam will be held at the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Immediately following there will be fellowship with the family at the American Legion in Columbus Junction. A private interment service will be held at the Columbus City Cemetery. The family encourages memorial donations be made to the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
