Jack Coleman

Jack Coleman, 73, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his home in Wapello. Born April 19, 1930, he was the son of Raymond and Janie Harvey Coleman, then step-son of Hattie Hake Coleman of Ellington, Missouri.

He married Velora Rexine Swanson on March 28, 1940, in Wapello.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lindel and Scott Sandvigen of Snohomish, Washington, Karen and Ken Baughman of Groveland, Illinois, and Lynette Miller of Wapello; three sons, Jack and Patty Coleman of Wapello, Donald and Kathi Coleman of Columbus City and Ronald Coleman of Oakville; one sister, Ruby Swanson of Oakville; and one brother, Arnold Coleman of Atalissa. There are 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, a daughter, and a sister.

Jack worked as a farmhand for several years and then went to the state of Washington to work as a logger from 1955 to 1960. He then worked for Hillyer Trucking Company out of Burlington for 20 years and then retired in 1995 from Heartland Express as a truck driver. After 30 years he became a member of the Caterpillar Million Miler Club.

His hobbies included restoring his antique trucks, a 1954 Chevy Pickup and a 1940 Federal pickup. He loved to go to car shows and enjoyed drag racing.

He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and brother, and will be missed tremendously. He touched so many lives and showed so much kindness to everyone he met, was a friend to everyone and a stranger to no one. All of his children can look around their homes and see their Dad’s helping hands.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Don Swanson and Brent Smith officiating. Music selections were songs from CDs that pertained to his life. Tributes were written and read by his children and niece Patty Grim. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery. His sons were the urn bearers and they used his 1954 Chevy Pickup he had restored to carry the urn to the cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
