Karl L. Newsom

Karl Lee Newsom, 53, of Mediapolis, died Friday morning, April 25, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center Emergency Room in West Burlington. The son of Carl B. and Mildred Elizabeth Johnson Newsom, he was born June 24, 1949, at Fulton, Missouri. He attended school in Scott’s Corner, Missouri and then had lived in Burlington, Naples, Florida from 1975 to 1985, Rantoul, Illinois. Until 1994 when he moved back to the Oakville and Mediapolis area.

He had worked as an auto mechanic, then in maintenance for Con Air Corp. in Rantoul, then in maintenance for the city of Oakville and in recent years as a partner of the Oakville Tap.

He was an avid fisherman and was a member of the Southeast Iowa Pool League.

He is survived by eight children; a daughter from his first marriage to Connie Smith of Missouri, Angela Newsom of Columbia Missouri; three from his second marriage to Susan Ertz (now Wisener) of Mediapolis, Tina and Bill Cravens of Burlington, Cindy Davis of Missouri, and Karl Brian Newsom of Burlington; and four from his third marriage to Deborah Kirkpatrick of Oakville, Margo and Craig Hadden of Ludlow, Illinois, Karla Monroe and Greg Ellis of Oakville, Anthony Newsom and Erin Petty of Oakville, and Jeremy Newsom of Mediapolis; thirteen grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Evans of Martinsburg, Missouri and Rita Penrod of Wellsville, Missouri; and three brothers, Clifford Ray Newsom of Seneca, Missouri, Larry Newsom of Naples, Florida and Joe Newsom of Fulton, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Karl Newsom was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Cremation followed the service.

The family met with friends Monday evening at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Oakville Fire and Rescue and the Wapello Community Ambulance Service.
