Lucy R. Grimm

Lucy Ross Grimm, 97, of Ames, died Monday, April 21 at Northcrest Health Care Center. Memorial services here held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Northcrest Retirement Community in the Green Room with the Rev. Kent M. Organ officiating. Burial will be in the Wapello Cemetery at a later date.

Lucy Ross Grimm was born on April 28, 1905 in David City, Nebraska to Jacob Gans and Lucy Clark Ross.

Her father, four older brothers and other family members helped raise her after her mother’s death when Lucy was eight.

She was a graduate of David City High School in 1923, attended Lindenwood College for one year and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1927 with a degree in English and Latin. She taught in Rising City, NE, Creston, Iowa and Downers Grove, Illinois.

She married Lloyd David Grimm on August 21, 1934. They made their home in Downers Grove until moving to Wapello in 1943 where they were involved in the family livestock business. She was active in the Wapello community, served on the school board and was a substitute teacher.

Lucy moved to Ames in 1961 when her son was a senior at Iowa State. She was the TKE fraternity housemother from 1962 – 1969 and moved to an apartment in Northcrest Retirement Community in 1984. She was an avid fan of Iowa State athletics and also enjoyed the many cultural activities of the University and community during her 40 years in Ames. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and a 52-year member of P.E.O., Chapter LN, Ames.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucy Jane and husband J. Larry Lane of Crystal Lake, Illinois; a son, David Ross and wife Mary Kate Grimm of Memphis, Tennessee; four grandsons, Dr. I. David Lane and wife Trish of Mequon, Wisconsin, Dr. James W. Lane and wife Malu of Superior, Wisconsin, Steven Ross Lane of Shoreview, Minnesota, and David Ross Grimm and wife Alison of Germantown, Tennessee; and a granddaughter Laurie and husband Kelly Heinz of Collierville, Tennessee. Lucy was the proud great-grandmother of eight: Carly, Ryan, Lorena and Sebastian Lane; Ross, Daniel and Mary Hannah Heinz; and Elizabeth Grimm. Also surviving are a nephew and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1956, her parents and four brothers.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Wapello Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service for Lucy R. Grimm will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, followed by the burial at the Wapello cemetery.

The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 1 p.m.
