MUSCATINE, Iowa - Ernest Bartenhagen, 83, Muscatine, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerry Kahler will officiate. Pallbearers are Jack Wilson, Don Wilson, Dick Wilson, Rick Bartenhagen, George Taylor and Wayne Shoultz. Honorary pallbearers are his nephews. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. After the burial, a time of fellowship will be held at the Island Methodist Church.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Island Methodist Church.

Mr. Bartenhagen was born July 15, 1920, in Muscatine, the son of Fred and Helena Freida Maria Baars Bartenhagen. He married Wanda Reinier Nov. 1, 1941, in Mystic.

He was a member of the Island Methodist Church; past member of the Muscatine Island Co-op; served on the Louisa-Muscatine School Board for more than 20 years where he was a past president; past member of the Moose Lodge; and also served on the Farm Bureau Board.

He farmed in the Muscatine area for many years.

He enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens to play cards and reading. He was also known for his creative engineering.

Survivors include his children, Fred Bartenhagen and wife Joan, Keith Bartenhagen of Muscatine and Roger Bartenhagen and wife Rebecca, all of Muscatine, Kathy Lund and husband Chris of Wasilla, Alaska, and Karen Varnum and husband Jeff of Wapello; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Harold and Richard; and two sisters, Dora Boyle and Johanna Shoultz.
