BURLINGTON, Iowa -Vera Pearl Whitaker, 93, Wapello, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Mrs. Whiter was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Des Moines County, the daughter of Edward and Florence Watson Bishop. She married Levi Whitaker Jr. He preceded her in death in April of 1954.

She was a farmer with her husband and later worked at the Burlington Basket Factory and at Leopold and then part time as a nurse aide at Kleins in Burlington for 20 years.

She attended the Church of God Holiness, Oakville and Church of the Nazarene, Wapello.

She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, baking pies and working on word search puzzles.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth McPhillips of Merritt Island, Fla.; son Ralph and Bronwen Whitaker, Wapello; six grandchildren, Glen Birt, Dennis Birt, Tonya Lessen, April Boshers, Cindy Stellern, and Shawna Lopez; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Levi; sister, Elmira Whitaker; two half brothers; and a half sister.
