Charles Nelson, age 68, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Columbus Junction following a lengthy illness.

A gathering and visitation with the family present to receive friends was held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 at the Jones and Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Private family services will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society. Charles was born September 24, 1942 in Washington, Iowa the son of Roy and Irene (Carriker) Nelson. He attended school in Washington. Charles was united in marriage to Betty Wilson on March 19, 1961 at First Baptist Church in Washington. He worked for Rath Packing for a few years. He also worked on a farm for many years until he became a truck driver for a good many years. Charles maintained the ball diamond in Columbus Junction before he retired. He enjoyed bowling, roller-skating and most of all he loved people.

Charles is survived by his wife, Betty Nelson of Columbus Junction; son, Rick Nelson and wife, Brenda of Columbus Junction; three grandchildren, Karie Marie Neff of Cedar Rapids; Jason Ryan Clark and Fiancé, Tasha of Columbus Junction; LuRanda Jo Clark of Columbus Junction; one sister, Patricia Edwards of Iowa City; and several nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Robert; an infant sister, Alice Mae; two nephews; one niece; his grandparents, Joe and Heleine Nelson; Charles and Lettie Carriker and several aunts and uncles.
