MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Mary Jean Mathews, 85, Mount Pleasant, formerly of Morning Sun, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at the Arbor Court, Mount Pleasant.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. The Rev. Harlan W. Winter will officiate. Music will be provided by Kathleen Hagele, organist. Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery.

Visitations are 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established to benefit the United Methodist Church, Morning Sun.

Mrs. Mathews was born July 22, 1918, in Wapello, the daughter of Harvey and Maude Ruby Shaw. She married Hugh Mathews in 1959 in Cedar Rapids. He preceded her in death in 1981.

She graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1936.

She worked in the office at Schramm's, Burlington, and then the telephone office for Iowa Illinois Telephone Company, New London.

She had attended the United Methodist Church, Morning Sun. She loved antiques and shopping.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Caris of Mount Pleasant; two nephews, Bob and Roberta Caris of Iowa City and David Caris of San Antonio, Texas; a niece, Jean and Scott Osland of Iowa City; six grand-nieces and -nephews; a stepdaughter, Margaret Long of Knoxville; a stepson, John Mathews of Mount Union; and stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Harold Shaw.
