John DeVore

John Ellsworth DeVore, 73, of Biloxi, Mississippi, formerly of Columbus City, Iowa, died Monday, February 17, 2003, at the Biloxi VA Medical Center due to complications from an extended illness.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 22 at the Columbus City Cemetery. Visitation was Friday evening at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. A memorial has been established at the funeral home.

He was born January 18, 1930, in Wapello, Iowa to David Earl and Merle DeEtte Calahan DeVore.

In November 1948 he joined the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country until July, 1964.

He married Bernice Mildred Elliott on August 1, 1952. He and his family moved and lived in the Biloxi area until June 1969. He then returned to the Columbus Junction area for several years before moving back to Biloxi in 1983.

Survivors include nine children; Richard and wife Lydia DeVore of Slocomb, Alabama, John Jr. and wife Jill DeVore of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Earl and wife Diane DeVore of Moore, Oklahoma, Donna and husband Tennis Kidd and Debbra and husband Cecil Simmons, all of San Antonio, Texas. Deana and husband Michael Buck of Ainsworth, Darla and husband Brian Morris of Rome, Linda and husband Andy Weeks of Muscatine, and Merle and husband Harold Bickett of Wapello; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, James and wife Dorothy DeVore, George and wife Ethel DeVore, Wapello, Robert and wife Ermalee DeVore, and Warren and wife Barbara DeVore of Burlington.

Mr. DeVore was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, Edrie Fisher, Jean Foster and Millie O’Bannion, and a brother, Vernon DeVore.
