Raymond Wendall Nyenhuis, 80, of Muscatine, died Thursday, May 26, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Calvary Church. Pastor Dan Schoepf of Calvary Church will officiate the service. Honorary bearers will be Wayne Gardner, Dave Utley, Terry Nyenhuis, Roger Nyenhuis, Brian Nyenhuis, and Stacey Nyenhuis. A time of food and fellowship will follow the service with burial afterward in Illinois City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the church. Memorials may be made to Gideons International. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences for the Nyenhuis family may be left at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

Raymond was born on October 1, 1930, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Wendell James and Josephine Reesink Nyenhuis. He married Lorna Morgan on June 22, 1951, at Calvary Baptist Church in Muscatine.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving from 1950 to 1954.

He was a self-employed appliance repairman and worked on major appliances for over 50 years.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He served as a Church Trustee for four years and president of XYZ, a senior group at church. He served as president of Pearl City Sam’s Club, and Gideons. He had also been elected and served as Mayor and a Council Member of the City of Fredonia, Iowa.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lorna Nyenhuis of Muscatine; his children, son, Terry Nyenhuis and wife, Polly Howard-Nyenhuis, of Loudon, Tennessee, and his children, Jessica Young, and her son, Nathan Young, and Alison Decker and husband, Mike, all of Muscatine, son, Roger Nyenhuis of Muscatine and his son, Luke Nyenhuis of North Liberty, son, Brian Nyenhuis of Seattle, Washington, daughter, Valarie Sell and husband, David, of Shelbyville, Indiana, and their children, Ciara Rutan and husband, Craig, of Indianapolis, Indiana, Nathaniel Sell and Bryant Sell, both of Shelbyville, Indiana; daughter, Cherlyn Quick of Phoenix, Arizona, and son, Stacey Nyenhuis and wife, Debbie, of Muscatine, and their daughter, Jennifer Haney and husband, Mason, of Muscatine; one sister, Kathryn Winegard and husband, Al, of Muscatine; and one sister-in-law, Helen Morgan of Phoenix, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maura Chism; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Billy W. Morgan.
