John “Walt” Bryant, 97 of Morning Sun, died Wednesday June 23, 2010 at the Morning Sun Care Center. The son of George and Lulu (Woolvertine) Bryant, he was born June 22, 1913 at Morning Sun. On June 27, 1937 he married Ruth Elizabeth “Betty” Highbarger in Morning Sun; she died September 21, 1967.

Mr. Bryant graduated from the Morning Sun High School. He drove a truck for Nichol’s Poultry in Morning Sun for many years and then worked at the I.A.A.P. until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun. He was a diehard Cardinal fan, attending his first game in 1934 at Sportsman Park and in 2006 at the age of 92 attended two games at the new Bush Stadium. He enjoyed arguing baseball with any Cub fan he could find. He coached youth baseball for many years with his most memorable time managing the Babe Ruth all star team in the Babe Ruth World Series in Glendive, MT in 1961. He was a diehard Democrat.

Survivors include: two daughters, Elizabeth (Jack) Poe of Wapello; Frances (Gene) Wilson of Morning Sun; five sons, John (Judy) Bryant of Cedar Rapids; Jim Bryant of Winfield; Mike (Shelly) Bryant of Granger, Indiana; Tom (Sue) Bryant of Morning Sun; Rich (Llewann) Bryant of Wapello; three sisters, Darlene (Floyd) Dean of Morning Sun; Shirley Haight and Maxine (Leland) Hobbs all of Mediapolis; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Timothy Bryant, four brothers, and one sister.

The funeral service was held Monday, June 28, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with the Rev. Scott Smith and the Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating; interment followed in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday afternoon at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family met with friends.

Memorials have been established in his name for the United Methodist Church of Morning Sun and the Morning Sun Care Center.
