Ray Leclair “Barney” Solomon, 88, of Conesville, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at his home. He was born April 28, 1915 in Louisa County, the son of Jess and Cora Mae Carr Solomon. He married Velma Goldsberry Hawley. After her death, he married Vera Ruth Buckman on January 28, 1989, in Belle Vista, Arkansas.

He farmed near Cotter for about 15 years, drove gravel and lime trucks for nearly 10 years, and was the owner and operator of Barney’s Tavern in Conesville for 45 years.

He was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church, the Louisa County Historical Society, the Louisa County Shriners, Masonic Lodge No. 107 of Columbus City, the KAABA Temple in Davenport, the Scottish Rite, the Moose Lodge of Muscatine, was a volunteer fireman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his sisters, Elsie Frauenholtz and husband Frank of Iowa City and Maxine Ferguson of Owasso, Oklahoma; a brother, Ralph Solomon of Lone Tree; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; two sisters, Edna McIntyre and Elva Cushatt; and two step-sons, Bob and Bill Hawley.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiating. Pallbearers were Rex Solomon, Kenneth Frauenholtz, Darrell Solomon, Willard Solomon, Darrel Conaway, Ed Buckman and Donald Buckman. Honorary bearers were Wayne Davis, David Solomon, Joe Solomon, Shane Leach, and Woody Roush. Burial was in the Conesville Cemetery.

Visitation was 4-y p.m. Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home.

A memorial in his name has been established at the funeral home.
