Juanita Sands

Juanita Sands, 72, of Fredonia died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Rev. Cathy Whitlatch will officiate. Pallbearers will be Joshua Sands, Jake Sands, Amos Garrett, Bobbi Jo Garrett, Anna Sands, Derek Halstead, Mike Jay, Mike Pavey and Dan Peters. Honorary bearers will be John Thomas Sands and Jenna Renae Sands.

Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church following committal services.

Visitation was 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church or Louisa County Ambulance.

Juanita Mae Carey was born December 1, 1930, in New Boston, Ill. to Thomas C. and Wilda M. Jebb Carey. She married Samuel H. Sands July 7, 1951, in Columbus Junction. She taught in country schools for four years and worked as a substitute teacher for 20 years for the Columbus Community School District.

She was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church, a past President of the United Methodist Women, a past President, Vice President and Treasurer of the Cedadr Crest Golf Club Ladies, Treasurer of the Lions Club, was a 31-year-member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, serving as their President from 1977-1979, and also worked in the secretary’s office for Louisa County Fair for several years.

She was the City Clerk for Fredonia from 1966 to 2003.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Thomas Sands of Columbus Junction; daughters Rita Garrett and Debbie Paetz and husband Jeff, both of Columbus Junction; six grandchildren, Joshua D. Sands and wife Christi, Jacob W. Sands, Anna M. Sands, Amos M. Garrett and wife Julie, Bobbie Jo Garrett and Derek P. Halstead; two great-grandchildren, John Thomas Sands and Jenna Renae Sands; and one sister, Erma A. Copelan and husband Earl of Columbus Junction.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Cloyce Carey; and one granddaughter, Brandi Jo Garrett.
