Dorothy Griffin

Dorothy Pogemiller “Dottie” Griffin, 82, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center of congestive health failure. Beloved wife of Darrell E. Griffin, Jr.; mother of Nancy Griffin-Dittli and Darrell E. Griffin, III; mother-in-law of Fiete Dittli and Betty Griffin; grandmother of Frederike Dittli and William and Katherine Griffin; daughter of the late Henry Earl and Nancy Harriet Pogemiller; sister of Betty Harsh, Mark Witek, Earleen Henry, Joanne Moard and the late Normal Stanley and Blanche Davis. She was born in Morning Sun, Iowa and lived in New Orleans for the last 36 years.

She graduated form the Registered Nursing program at Burlington General Hospital, Burlington, Iowa, and entered the Army Nurse Corps. She served on active duty in the Philippines, Japan and Alaska. After she left the Army she continued to accompany her husband for the remainder of his military career. She was a world traveler and had friends in many countries.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and was active with the German Seamen’s Mission. She was one of the founding members of Ikebana International and maintained her interest in Japanese flower arranging. She was a creative seamstress and a wonderful cook and baker.

A memorial service was held Thursday, June 5 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 2021 S. Dupre St., New Orleans, LA 70125. Since she wanted her body donated to the Tulane Medical School, the interment will occur at a future date.
