Raymond D. Wilson

Raymond D. Wilson, age 57, of Wapello, Iowa, died Monday afternoon June 23, 2003, at his home following an extended illness. The son of David Franklin and Carrie Mae Hall Wilson, he was born June 10, 1946 at rural Columbus Junction. He married Caecilia Helmel on July 2, 1966 at Beaumont, California.

He attended the Columbus Community School. When his parents retired from farming in 1962, he moved with them to California.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 – 1967.

He worked at Lear Corporation, formerly known as Sheller Globe, of Iowa City for twenty years.

He as an active member of the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department for a number of years. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, and simply tinkering in his workshop. He was proud of his family and being called “Opa” by his wonderful grandkids. One of his favorites that he enjoyed was the weekly Saturday night family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Caecilia; three daughters, Lisa Holland of Wapello, Tina and Steve Allen of Columbus Junction, and Anna and Pat Mesler of Wapello; one son, Paul and Anne Wilson of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mina Grover of Riverside, California, Grace Ferrell of Yucaipa, California and Betty Nelson of Columbus Junction; and three brothers, Ed Wilson of Laurel Hills, Florida, Charles Wilson of San Jacinto, California, and David Wilson of Letts. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sally Johnson and an infant Lucille Wilson, and one brother, Leroy Wilson.

The funeral ceremony for him will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2003 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Pastor David Seelye officiating. Burial will follow at the Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus City.

Friends may call after noon on Thursdays at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Iowa City Hospice.
