William Shearer

William “Bill” Shearer, 86, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Thursday, June 19, 2003 at the Washington County Hospital, Washington, Iowa.

Funeral services for him were Monday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiated. There was no visitation. Memorial gifts may be given to the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. After burial there was refreshments for family and friends at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church in Columbus Junction.

William Dailor Shearer was born June 11, 1917 in Columbus Junction, IA to Brainard “B.H.” and Maude Sarah (Hanft) Shearer. He graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1936. He attended the University of Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College. He worked 20 years at the First National Bank, Tulsa, Oklahoma, before returning to the Columbus Junction area to take over as the editor of the Columbus Gazette Newspaper. He was an Army veteran of WWII and served in the South Pacific area. He was a member of the American Legion and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

He was survived by one brother, Woodrow Shearer of Columbus Junction, three nephews; two nieces, a sister-in-law, Barbara Shearer of Washington, Iowa; and a special friend, Ruth Ingram of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Paul V. Shearer, and a sister, Maxine K. Robertson.
