Funeral services for J. B. Gookin, notice of whose death was given in the Gazette last week, were held at two o'clock Friday afternoon at the Richie Funeral Home and were conducted by the Rev. H. A. Henderson of this city.

A group of sacred musical selections were played by Miss Effie Kelly.

Flower attendants were Mrs. Glen Cummings and Mrs. Dave Gravatt.

Casket bearers were Glenn Cummings, Dave Gravatt, Harold Rawhouser, Paul Howell, Charles Howell, and John R. Williams of Crawfordsville.

Among those from out of town who attended the service were C. B. Gookin, Waterville, Minnesota; C. S. Gookin, Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Mellon Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Schmidt, Williamsburg, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Connon, Mrs. Mallon Scharf, Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Morehead, Tipton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Buckles and Howard Buckles, and Mrs. Marvin DuVall, Donds, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kennedy, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. A. A. Dahlberg, Chicago, Illinois and Mrs. N. J. Johansen, West Liberty, Iowa.

Jacob B. Gookin, was born February 16, 1879, at Janesboro, Tennessee the son of Charles and Alice (Gammon) Gookin. He came to Iowa from Tennessee when a young man and has since made this community his home with the exception of a few years spent in Mina, South Dakota and on a farm near Iowa City, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Huston of Columbus Junction February 21, 1906.

To this union four children were born, two of who with the wife and mother survive. They are John S. Gookin of West Branch, Iowa and Mrs. Boyd Stahle, of Iowa City, Iowa. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Clegg of Ainsworth and Mrs. Georgia Williams of Crawfordsville and by two brothers, C. B. Gookin of Waterville, Minnesota and Sidney Gookin of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by one son, Eugene L. Gookin, who lost his life at Guam in World War II, July 21, 1944 and by a babe who died in infancy.

Mr. Gookin was a kindly man with a smile and a cheery word for everyone. He enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him and was ever willing to be of assistance in time of need.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as an officer for many years.

Mr. Gookin had not enjoyed good health for many years and during the past 18 months he had been unable to carry on his farming operations. He had been confined to his home since January of this year but for several weeks he had seemed to improve and was able to be out part of the time.

Saturday, April 16, he suffered a cerebral hemmorhage and was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He never regained consciousness and the end came quietly Tuesday morning, April 19, at 10:15 a.m.
