Herbert “Stub” Harbison, Jr., age 83 of Morning Sun, died Monday June 22, 2009 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The son of Herbert and Mildred Ramer Harbison, he was born October 29, 1925 in Gladwin, Iowa. He attended the Frog Pond School in Gladwin and Columbus Community High School. He was united in marriage to Mildred Christine Bell on February 12, 1944 in Cotter, Iowa. Herb, aka Stub, worked for his father in his implement business until he was called into service. He served in the Army during W.W. II and received a Honorable discharge and Purple Heart after being wounded in Germany. Upon returning home from the war he farmed west of Columbus Junction and in 1950 moved to Morning Sun and opened a hog buying station for Oscar Mayer and started Harbison Trucking business. He and his wife loved auctions and after retirement they opened the “Nu to U” resale store in Morning Sun. Herbert was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, Hays-Scott American Legion #112, and served on the Morning Sun School Board.

He is survived by; his wife Mildred of 65 years; one son Tom and wife Sherry Harbison of Morning Sun; one daughter Ann and husband Doug Lee of Morning Sun; five grandsons; Mike (Wendy), Jim (Darcie) Tom (Michelle) Eric (Lora) and Nick; nine great grandchildren; Mike, Kayla, Lillie, Kayla, Hannah, Zachary, Logan, Caeden and Gavyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son Jimmy, sister Marjory Dodder, and brother Jack Harbison.

The funeral service will be held Friday June 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist church in Morning Sun, with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating; interment will follow at the Columbus City Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 2-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral home in Morning Sun, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m.

Memorials have been established for the Centenary United Methodist church and the Morning Sun Community Center
