Mary Hafner, 78, of Davenport, formerly of Wapello, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Genesis East Hospital in Davenport.

Funeral services for Mary were Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Rev. Fr. Joseph Sia officiated. Casket bearers were Larry Hafner, Donald Hafner, Dan Hafner, Roger Hafner, Nick Hafner, Josh Park, Dwight Iles, Craig Schoonover and Larry Day. Following the services a time of food and fellowship was held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 102 Gamble Street, Columbus Junction, IA. Visitation for Mary was held on Friday morning, April 24th, from 9:30-11:00 A.M. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society in Mary’s name. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Mary Margaret Utter was born January 14, 1931 in Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Claire (Estle) Utter. On September 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to Byron “Gene” Hafner in Davenport, Iowa. Mary was a homemaker and loving wife and mother. She loved animals, especially horses and birds, and enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, cooking, crocheting and needlepoint. Mary loved spending time with her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary will be deeply missed by her children, Larry A. Hafner and wife, Lyn of Iowa City, Donald J. Hafner and wife, Beth of Davenport, Carolyn Hafner Iles and husband, Dwight of West Branch, Linda B. Vogel, Dan L. Hafner and wife, Beth and Roger E. Hafner and wife, Donna, all of Bettendorf; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard Utter and his wife, Phyllis of Columbus Junction; and one sister, Jean Smith and her husband, Morris of Davenport.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on February 7, 2007, her sister, Elizabeth Eberlein and a great-granddaughter, Mallory Park.
