Howard K. “Griff” Griffith, 93, of Letts, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Columbus Junction. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the Letts Cemetery. Pastor Mike Townsley will officiate the services. Visitation for Howard will be held on Tuesday, October 20, from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Howard. Online condolences may be left to the Griffith family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Howard Kramer Griffith was born on September 22, 1916 in Cotter, Iowa the son of Howard and Bertha B. Kramer (Griffith) Votroubek.

Howard was united in marriage to Mary Louise Vorwerk on September 3, 1938 in Muscatine. Howard served with the United States Navy from 1943 – 1946 in the Pacific Theater, as a Gunner’s Mate on a LST. Howard farmed in Louisa County, was the owner and operator of the Letts Tap and worked at Kemp Construction until his retirement. Howard spent his retirement enjoying a cabin at Lake Odessa, fishing and boating. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren swimming and boating at the lake and going to see them participate in various sports, especially wrestling.

Howard will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary “Bea” of Columbus Junction; his three sons, Dick Griffith and his wife, Barb and John Griffith and his wife, Jan both of Letts, Ted Griffith and his wife, Lisa of West Liberty; two daughters, Sandra Townsley of Letts and Marilyn Wilson and her husband, Denise of Gering, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy, a son, Michael in childhood, a grandson, Timothy Griffith, a son-in-law, Terry Townsley and three sisters, Josephine Stapp, Marguerite Allman and Helen Shenk
