Clyde William Scherer, 85, of rural Burlington, died at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

Born January 25, 1925, on the family farm in rural Burlington, he was the son of John George and Anna Amelia Miller Scherer. On February 12, 1944, he married M. Kathryn Hays in Ft. Madison, Ia. She died March 16, 2007.

Clyde was a lifelong farmer of grain and livestock. At age 17, he took over the family farm to provide for his mother and sisters.

He served on the Eureka No. 6 school board for several years, the Des Moines County Conservation Board, and a member of the Rock Spring Cemetery Association, as well as serving as a county trustee for Union Township. He enjoyed square dancing, playing pinochle, dominos and spending time with the grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Mary) Scherer of Johnston and Gary (Lois) Scherer of Danville; one daughter, Gail (Gregory) Stoller of Columbus Junction; eight grandchildren; one step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Katie, he was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters and two brothers.

As per Clyde's request cremation has been accorded.

There will be no visitation.

The memorial service for Mr. Scherer will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home facilitated by Ronald Scherer and Gary Scherer. Inurnment will be in South Walker Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Association.
